Facts: The canals in Copenhagen inner city with Thorvaldsen's museum and the Christianborg Castle Church behind the museum.
Bertel Thorvaldsen created almost 550 sculptures, reliefs and portrait busts. The technical method used in producing a sculpture in marble or bronze meant that - when the finished sculpture had been delivered to the client - there was always a full-size plaster model left standing in the workshop. Consequently, Thorvaldsen was throughout his life always surrounded by the original plaster models of his constantly growing oeuvre. So the idea of setting up something - a museum - where all these sculptures could stand even after the studios in Rome had to close down after Thorvaldsen's death was never very far away.
The Castle Church resembles a Greek temple, and is build in strict New-Classicistic style. Build in 1826 and re-consecrated in 1997 after a fire started with an emergency rocket during the annual Copenhagen Carnival in 1996. The church is used by the royal family, and the Royal Danish Academy of music uses the church for organ teaching.
