Flora Danica - The Dansih People´s Gift:

A Royal Bouquet

April 2004 A very special wedding gift awaits Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and his fiancée, Miss Mary Donaldson, when they marry on May 14th. The Danish people´s gift to their future royal couple is a Flora Danica dinner service with plates and cups bearing the young couple´s new monogram, designed by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, mother of the Crown Prince.

Flora Danica is perhaps the most prestigious porcelain service of its kind still in production. It is known around the world as the epitome of Danish design and craftsmanship, and the Danes consider it part of their cultural heritage.

For 200 years, this symphony of delicate flowers has decorated royal tables at festive occasions, creating a fairytale scenery with gold-decorated edges reflecting the light.

Now a new chapter is being written in the story of this luxurious dinner service which is still being painted by hand at the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory, exactly as it was two centuries ago.

A royal gift from the people

The people of Denmark has a fine tradition of congratulating members of the Royal Household with a People’s Gift on the occasion of a royal wedding. Flora Danica was chosen from more than 800 suggestions presented to the committee behind the People´s Gift by the Danish people – a choice reflecting the royal couple´s interest in design.

The Flora Danica dinner service with monogrammed plates and cups will be used by the future royal couple on special occasions, serving as a worthy representative of Danish art, tradition and values.

Producing this delicately hand-painted service is an extensive task involving Royal Copenhagen´s finest painters and decorators. This is why the Flora Danica People´s Gift will not be ready for the wedding on May 14th. Instead, the young couple will be presented with a symbol of the Flora Danica People´s Gift.

About Royal Copenhagen

Royal Copenhagen is one of the oldest porcelain houses in Europe. It was founded in 1775 under the patronage of the Queen of Denmark, Juliane Marie (1729 - 1796). From the outset, the three waved lines, symbolizing Denmark’s three straits, the Sound and the Great and Little Belts, were adopted as the company trademark.

Today, Royal Copenhagen is a global brand manufacturer of luxury products within tabletop, collectibles and gift articles. We have a global presence covering USA, Europe and Asia, with more than 500 employees around the world.

In 2004, Royal Copenhagen brings the 229 years of tradition to a brand new porcelain manufactory just outside Copenhagen.
